Adopting a rescue dog in West Lothian

  • Expect a home check. Most dog rescues will visit your home and check your garden fencing before you adopt.
  • Meet the dog more than once. Many rescues encourage several visits or walks so you can get to know each other.
  • Bring the family. Rescues usually want to see how the dog gets on with children and any dogs you already have.
  • Think about breed rescues. If you love a particular breed, such as greyhounds or spaniels, a breed-specific rescue may have the right dog for you.
  • Plan for the costs. As well as the adoption fee, budget for food, vet care and pet insurance from day one.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to adopt a dog in West Lothian?

Adoption fees vary between rescues and usually cover vaccinations, microchipping and neutering. Check each rescue’s website or ask them directly.

Can I adopt a rescue dog if I work full time?

Often yes, but rescues will want to know how your dog will be cared for during the day, for example by a dog walker or daycare. Some dogs cope better with time alone than others.
