How to choose a name for your dog
- Keep it short. One or two syllables, like Max or Bella, are easiest for dogs to recognise.
- Avoid names that sound like commands. "Kit" sounds like "sit" and "Bo" sounds like "no", which can confuse a dog in training.
- Match the personality. Spend a few days with your new dog before deciding. A laid-back dog might suit Teddy, while a lively one might be a Ziggy.
- Say it out loud. You will be calling it across parks and fields for years, so make sure you are happy shouting it!
Can you rename a rescue dog?
Yes. Many rescue dogs are renamed by their new families and adapt quickly, especially with lots of praise and treats when they respond to their new name. If your dog already knows its name well, you could choose something that sounds similar, such as changing Bella to Ella.
